The state of the jute industry in West Bengal and rest of India is not looking good at all. With the recent murder of the CEO which happened at the Northbrook jute mill, the entire industry has gone through a major setback. The Northbrook jute mill is one of the most recognized ones from the state of West Bengal and employs lakhs of workers. The CEO was surrounded from all sides and brutally murdered by a bunch of miscreants. This kind of a ghastly incident has sent shockwaves to the entire jute sector. A variety of incidents and factors have resulted in this situation.
Ghanshyam Sarda is one of the most prominent business leaders from the city of Kolkata. Over the years, he has invested in several sectors, the jute industry being the primary one. Owning several jute mills across India, he has attained a very fine credibility for himself. The gruesome trouble in the jute industry sector erupted with the reduction of orders from the state and central governments.
Previously, the various jute mills located at different parts of India had sufficient orders in their sleeve but currently it has mostly shut. An immense competition from the neighboring country of Bangladesh is also witnessed in the jute sector. Bangladesh does not levy surplus charge on imports which has resulted in a flourishment in the jute sector. Many of the jute industry leaders have shifted their focus towards Bangladesh.
With the problem at the Northbrook jute mill, all the workers have lost their jobs and their families are in despair. The central and the state government have not been able to do anything for the betterment of the sector as yet. As per the insiders from the jute industry, the murder which took place at the Northbrook jute mill has been blamed on anti-socials and it has already created a considerable ruckus. The current setback in the industry can also be put on unionism.
The various union leaders have created a major trouble in several jute mills with a considerable amount of interference. The various members from the Ghanshyam Sarda Kolkata group want the stalemate to end at the earliest. In this regard, a meeting with the current chief minister of West Bengal has also been convened. With a positive frame of mind from the chief minister, the problem can be resolved at an early stage.
