Fast Healthy this Navratri according to our Nutritionist

by Fitfoodies Mantra fitfoodies

The time of the year is here again when Goddess Durga is welcomed into our lives with much fervour and enthusiasm. There are various ways in which people welcome the goddess during this time of the year. From fasting for the nine days that the navratre take place in to turning vegetarian during the celebrations and even avoiding the intake of onion and garlic people around the country observe and celebrate this time with much fervour!

If however, you choose to fast, whether for all nine days or merely for a few days then you need to do that in a healthy way. What you need to know is that fasting is an amazing way to let your body detox, and when done the right way, you can literally see and feel a huge difference in your health in a mere span of few days!

Should you fast?

A nutritionist in West Delhi says, “First, what you need to realize is that fasting is not for everyone. It is not about your state of mind, though that might also be a factor, it is your physical condition that is at stake here. You need to remember that if you are suffering from some ailment then you should think twice about fasting”.

Anyone and everyone suffering from problems like diabetes, acidity or even gastrointestinal reflux disease should ideally avoid fasting. Children and even pregnant women should think twice before they decide to hold a fast.

Eat Properly:

The main purpose of fasting does not mean that you skip a meal that is not how things work. Starving yourself is not the answer and neither is over-eating your favourite vrat foods. A balance needs to be established to make sure that you stay at the top of your health game even when you are fasting!

Try to have smaller meals frequently in a day, as this will help keep your blood sugar levels normal and your metabolism active. Try to indulge in things like a fruit chaat, or raw banana kebabs so that you do not feel tired and are able to maintain your energy levels.

Hydrate:

Another dietician in Delhi NCR states, “When fasting, make sure that you stay hydrated well. However, this does not mean that you keep drinking tea and coffee as much as you want since these will only end up dehydrating you even further”.

You can easily include liquids like coconut water, fruit juices and lime water in your beverage intake. Not only will these make sure that you stay hydrated, but they easily add more variety to your menu as a whole.

Take a break from sugar:

Sugar is not your best friend, especially added and processed sugar and this is the case whether you are fasting or not. We know that technically sugar is allowed during fasting but it is always a good idea to give your body a break from the unnecessary addition of sugar.

However, if you really have to have something sweet, indulge in things like jaggery, honey or dates. These are the healthier alternatives and also adhere to the fasting rules that you might be following.

Say yes to protein

Protein is an essential part of your daily diet and is something that cannot be compromised on. It helps you feel fuller for longer as a result of which you do not end up binge eating. But during your fast time, you are not supposed to eat lentils and grains. However, you can easily get plenty of good proteins from other sources too.

Opt for things like cottage cheese, milk, ghee, kuttu ka atta and even Samak ka atta as these will provide you with some much-needed protein dose and leave you feeling satiated and full.

Try to stick to these small tips and trust us when we tell you that your navratre fasts will be much healthier than you could even think of! Happy Naratre everyone! Eat Healthy and Stay Fit!
