How to use/apply Essential Oils externally?



Essential Oils are used all over the world in folk medicine from the past thousands of years for being used internally in food for good digestions & other health benefits as well as externally on skin, hair, nails, or other body parts. Essential Oils are majorly available in 2 forms i.e. diluted and undiluted. 


Undiluted Essential Oil is basically meant to be used by applying topically on specific parts of the body.


On the other hand, diluted essential oil requires the mixture of carrier oil such as olive, almond, sesame, or other oils to be used on sensitive skin only. Essential Oils are applied externally in many different ways mentioned below:

1. Topical Application

To use essential oils topically/externally on the skin or over the entire body, just take a small amount in your palm and apply it over the desired area of your body. You can also apply it with a cloth or cotton ball. However, for sensitive & delicate skin it is recommended to mix the essential oil with some carrier oil and then apply it to your skin. You can store the mixture of essential oil and carrier oil in a roll-on bottle for easy access which will also increase the shelf life of the oils.

2. Massage

Essential Oils are also used for body massage in many salons and spa centers but for massage, the essential is prepared by mixing a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil. The message is done till,

It gets absorbed fully by the body until it gets absorbed under the skin. Massage is also recommended by doctors and physicals because it helps in relieving stress and anxiety.

3. Baths

Generally, essential oils are also being used for a bath by adding a few drops of essential oil in warm bath water or in a bathtub which helps in a deep absorption of oils under the skin for relieving the body from extreme stress and anxiety and the pleasant aroma of these essential oil also, calms the mind and soul.

4. Compress

For deep penetration of the essential oil into the skin, compress technique is also a method which can be used effectively by adding a few drops of essential oil in a bowl of water and apply the oil on the selected parts of the body using a soft towel. However, the compression is of 2 type’s i.e. cold & warm compression which totally depends on the temperature required or proffered.

Other Therapies

Although, there are various therapies for the use and application of essential oils due to their potential health benefits in the fields of reflexology, acupuncture, auricular therapy and many other types of therapy. And these therapies are being used for a long time.
