As published in The Telegraph e-paper, Southern Eastern Railways has resumed one special Howrah-Digha daily service to run for the upcoming 42 days. During the Durga Puja season, the East Midnapore seaside tourist spots of Mandarmani and Digha did prove to be unlikely beneficiaries, rejuvenating from the tepid lockdowns.

In both these towns, the hoteliers accustomed to the weekend tourists from the suburban towns and Calcutta for weekend picnics, are witnessing near capacity bookings for the upcoming Pujas.

Railway services had been suspended in Digha, since 23rd March 2021, but have now received the shot in the arm right when South Eastern Railways had resumed the much needed one special Howrah-Digha daily service, that will be running for the upcoming 42 days.

To reach Digha, the tourists heavily depend on trains and buses, but the depressed Digha tourism industry since March regardless of the partial re-openings since July 2021, as said by Dipra Das Chakraborty, Digha hoteliers’ association secretary. But with above 50% capacity in bookings for the coming week in the Pujas, has been a very pleasant surprise to everyone.

As pointed out by different sources, added to the Howrah special train, in September, 52 government bus routes did resume to and from Digha, Tajpur and Mandarmani. The same sources have added that the train fares had been notably high, in the air-conditioned chair cars at ₹458 round trip per head; bookings for the best hotel in Digha had been coming fast and in thick.

So, when you have planned to spend your Durga Pujas in the beach town, then reserve a room at the best hotel in Digha before the rooms fill out fast.

If the bookings keep getting higher for another month, then the hotels will be recovering from the losses in this very year, much sooner than expected.

Most tourists travel to Mandarmani by their private cars, and the bookings have gone high by 80%.

In a note of confirmation, it is learned that the safety protocols at the family-friendly and budget hotels in New Digha are strictly in place, and guests have to take precautions. A bonus is, there is no need to excessively depend on public transport.

Safe tourism is the main priority at Digha, as it is the vision of the Chief Minister for Digha, and definitely for the hotel managers. The hoteliers are taking up all the possible precautions, as needed during these times when the world is fighting to win against the deadly coronavirus. Butt, since, the festive season is ahead in Bengal, let us not think about it, and focus on planning a wonderful trip to Digha!
