Long before the country understood the importance of education, some of the great minds taken a step forward in voluntarily taking education and opted for subjects like law. The concerned resulted in establishment of Indian Institute of science Education and Research (IISER).

The concept of establishment of IISER was born with the intentions of breaking the barriers of not having quality research facilities available for the undergraduate students. The scientific leaders and academician of the country came together to address a very important issue that in a country of more than a billion people and oodles of institutes, there is not a single institute which focus more on the research oriented science education for undergraduate students. Ministry of Human Resource and Development was approached with the concept a decade ago in the year 2005 and the concept being such approach got instant approval. The process of establishment started in no time and steps like campus allocation, financial planning, Infrastructure, designing the curriculum was done on priority. Admission procedure completed within a month so that academic session of the planned IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata can be started. In August 2006 both the IISER started with 44 and 38 Students in Pune and Kolkata respectively. All the other IISER of the countries as part of the expansion started later in couple of years.
