Designing Rooms with Dark Wall Paint: A 2018 Trend

by Kevin Smith Author

It's time to cover up the boring builder gray, off-white, and beige walls in your home in favor of a unique alternative: bold and dark wall colors. Navy blue, black, charcoal, and deep forest green paint colors are more popular in home interiors than ever, and 2018 will show an increase in rooms that rely on dark colors for unique and eye-popping designs.

Here are some tips for designing your home around dark paint colors, and ideas for interior paint jobs in Atlanta.

Reversing Light and Dark

Traditionally, home interiors are designed with dark furniture, with black leather sofas, pine tables, and other dark pieces filling in rooms with light walls. Beige and white, for instance, are common because they're easy to design around. And because a good balance of light and dark makes for balanced rooms, most people prefer to fill their homes with dark, bold furniture.

But it's 2018 now, so you should expect to see a unique reversal of this outdated trend. Try painting a room navy blue or another bold, dark color. Then, balance the room with light furniture. Your guests might expect a navy chair against a beige wall, but what about a beige chair against a navy wall? The effect will wow your guests and make for an interesting twist on classic design balance.

Dark and Cozy Powder Rooms

Powder rooms, or guest baths, are some of the most important rooms in any home. They offer a touch of privacy for your guests and give you the freedom to make some incredibly unique design choices, as long as the right appliances are in place. Why not go bold with a dark bathroom? Plum, for instance, is a beautifully dark color that's the perfect backdrop for white bathroom fixtures and cabinetry. Granite, marble, and other stone countertops materials also look great against a dark background. If you have light appliances and countertops in your kitchen, consider making the switch to dark kitchen walls, too.

Professional Touch

While you might be tempted to visit your local hardware store and get to re-designing, you should know that professional painters will give you much more impressive results, especially when it comes to dark paint. Dark paint colors are more likely to give you trouble than light ones, since streaks and uneven mixing will be glaringly obvious with a dark color like charcoal gray.

But there's not need to worry when you hire pro painters for interior paint jobs in Atlanta. They'll give you handsomely dark walls in smooth, even coats so you can re-desing your home to suit 2018's biggest design trends.
