Darren Sammy Enough for Everyone
by Iftakhar Sheikh Article Writer
T20 has always been a
treat to watch no matter which team or which country. Every match is a
nail-bitter. This time it’s Bangladesh who is providing a treat for
everyone.
The same is being done by the trendsetters in
the cricket, the Caribbeans. This time it was the two time world cup winner and
former captain of the West Indies cricket team, Darren Sammy.
Sammy dropped in late and the assault made Rajshahi Kings
win over the table toppers Khulna Titans, with his blazing innings of sixes and
fours, Sammy scored an unbeaten 71. This score didn’t just bring the team out
of the trouble but it also gave them a good total to defend against the lights
of amazing batsmen Khulna has. This is not the first time that the team was
waiting for some fireworks by the West Indies captain to pull them back from
falling off the cliff. After Umar Akmal got out for a leg before decision the
team was already down with 4 top order batsmen on a score of 66 and the match
was down for 11 overs.
With just 9 overs left in the innings, Sammy took his time
to put his eye on the ball until it started looking like a football and
adjusted his radar according to the pitch he was batting on. As he was on it,
fellow batsmen Samit Patel and Mehedi Hasan also had to go back to the pavilion
with a collective score of the team stuck at just a ton. Sammy started hunting
by hitting Pakistani medium fast bowler Junaid Khan, and afterwards since there
was no holding back, the aggressive innings was clearly visible in Sammy’s
batting style. With this one over the ropes, Sammy made Khulna taste 5 more in
which most were the flick to the legside boundary. His 34 ball knock of 71 also
had 4 hours in the scorecard. This powerful hard hitting innings added up the
score and made the team reach a fighting total of 154 on the fall of 8 wickets.
Cooper from Khulna took 2 wickets and conceded 31 runs, Sammy was without a
doubt the top scorer.
In response Khulna ran out of overs and was able to score
just 145 with having 6 of their players going back to the pavilion. Wessels
here was the top scorer and got out for 36, meanwhile other batsmen did not
trouble the scorecard much and regularly kept on going back to where they came
from.
Sammy also played his
part in the bowling by just conceding 8 runs and taking a vital wicket of the
top scorer of opponent team Wessles. Mahmudullah was their last hope but he
also fell to the bowlers in the following over. Mohammad Sami and Farhad Reza
bowled in the tight lines just to support rest of the team and keep the other
batsmen away from the big shots. Sammy was named the player of the match for
his overall performance.
The best thing about
T20 is that anyone can surprise you, from anywhere. Even a youngster can hit
you out of the park and even an experienced campaigner gets out on a duck so
you can expect anything.
