Come Prepared to Negotiate Medical Bills
by Isabella Bautista Area ManagerIf you are new to medical negotiating, here are some basics
tips that could help you successfully negotiate your medical bills:
Try to
Stay Calm and Polite
Do your best to keep your feelings under control while
communicating with medical billing service providers. Expressing your needs in
a clear and organized way will make it easier for the provider to understand
your condition and could increase the chances the representative you are
talking with is able to assist you.. If you’re annoyed or frustrated, cool off
before picking up the cell phone.
Do Your
Homework
You may have a better chance at negotiations if you’ve
researched the normal costs of the treatments you received—particularly if you
use data that’s exact to your area. You can get this data by contacting
competitors, with a little online searching, or by referring resources like
Healthcare Bluebook.
Don’t
Underestimate the Power of Empathy
Explain economic or other hardships you’re facing and why
you’re struggling with medical repayment. Perhaps you’ve recently lost your
job, or you just got out of college and you’re on your own for the initial
time. Calling on the other person’s intelligence of compassion and humanity may
support your cause.
Write
Down Everything
Keep strong notes with the dates, names, and affiliations for
every phone call you make, as well as reference numbers if valid. It’s easy to
forget what you spoke about and with whom. Keep it all in one place. And ask
for written agreement regarding any progress or negotiations you are able to
achieve.
Don’t
Hesitate to Escalate
Start with the generic phone number on your medical bill. But
if the person you’re speaking with looks unwilling or unable to assist, don’t
be afraid to request for a supervisor. Be prepared to explain the situation,
over and over again, to each person you speak with.
If all else fails, apply a bit of pressure. While remaining
polite, state that you probably won’t use their service in future if they don’t
help now. Mention that you’ll share your bad experience with your network,
including on social media.
