Choosing an eating disorder therapist – what to consider?

by Ellern Mede Eating Disorder Treatment

Are you or someone you care about living with an eating disorder? In that case, it’s crucial that you find the right treatment as early as possible. If left untreated, the condition can be life-threatening! With that said, here are four critical factors to consider when looking for a therapist to treat your eating disorder.

Start With Referrals

The best referral usually comes from a trusted friend. Many people you are acquainted with may know an eating disorder therapist in London. For the most part, when a referral comes from an individual, the person is someone they feel positive about. Another alternative is to contact a medical school or hospital that you respect. If you have high regard for the institution, the referrals will usually be well qualified. These two options are the first place to start.

Training and experience of the therapist

The most crucial factor in choosing an eating disorder therapist is their experience with eating disorders. Ask them how many years of experience do they have in general and how long has eating disorders been one of their specialties.

Who’s the therapist?

Do you feel more comfortable with a male or female therapist? Do you want someone reliable and direct or someone who’s more gentle and empathetic? Do you want to do a brief treatment that addresses eating disorder thoughts and behaviour? Or would you need a longer-term inpatient eating disorder treatment where you may deal with feelings and underlying issues for the eating disorders?

Feeling of rapport with the therapist

The most critical aspect of choosing a therapist is how you feel in their presence. Do you feel a sense of rapport and connection with the therapist? Do you feel comfortable talking about how you feel? Do you feel safe telling the therapist about aspects of the therapy that make you uncomfortable? If you don’t feel safe, it probably isn’t a good match.

Well then, these were four factors you should consider before you choose a therapist to treat your eating disorder. Keep them in mind when you go out looking for an eating disorder therapist.
