When picking out a scooter, you need to consider a number of different things.

Apart from the looks, engine power, scooter size and weight of the two-wheeler are necessary considerations.

The weight of the scooter plays a key role in helping you figure out if you will be able to handle it or not.

Generally, lighter scooters are easy to handle, while heavier ones require a lot of training to maneuver easily.

Here are a few things you should know when figuring out if you will be able to handle the scooter effectively:

How the weight affects handling

When parking

Naturally, scooters that are on the heavier side require a bit of strength when parking, especially when putting it up on the center stand. Also as scooters don’t really have a reverse gear option, you will need to push it back with your feet to park. This might not be equally easy for every rider.

When riding

Heavier scooters also have longer braking distances. They require more leaning to maneuver around corners. At the same time, heavier scooters are highly unlikely to be affected by factors, like aggressive gusts of wind, making them more stable under specific weather conditions.

Mileage

Heavier scooters also tend to take a toll on the engine as they require more power due to the added weight.

Similarly, lighter scooters give a better mileage. While both options are far better than going for cars in terms of fuel efficiency, this is definitely a factor worth considering.

What makes the scooter heavy?

Scooters vary largely in terms of weight. However, a few primary elements contribute to that weight:

·         Engine Power: The larger an engine is, the powerful it is. Therefore, if you go for scooters that fall within the 125-150cc range, you would naturally end up with a heavier scooter than the 50-70cc range.

·         Body Size: The body size also adds a lot to that weight. A scooter that has a larger, wider body will surely be heavier than one which has a sleeker outlook.

·         Plastic vs. Metal Body: While plastic is much more common in modern scooters as it makes them lighter, you might also come across metal variants. Many old and new Vespa models come with metal bodies which makes them heavier on the road.

·         Additional Accessories: While an extra storage accessory would certainly look good on the back and would be useful, it would come with its own weight. Similarly, additional bling like lights, meters and everything do the same.
