Breaking Surrogacy Myths

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

Surrogacy is a procedure through which an intended the parent can have their genetic babies from another women’s womb. This option is used where an intended parent cannot conceive naturally or any other treatment such as IVF, IUI, and so on but still need a child that can relate to them biologically.

In the surrogacy process two parties, intended parents and surrogate mother, are involved. Both parties are bound by a legal contract signed by them before the process is started.

Though there are advanced medical facilities, experienced experts, legal contracts, and laws to make this process safer and normalized, still, there are some myths that hesitant people to opt for this option. An expert team in SCI IVF HOSPITAL - the best surrogacy center in Delhi can handle all surrogacy-related queries.

Myth 1: The Baby Inherits Physical Features from Surrogate Mother.

Truth:  Surrogate mother and the baby do not have any biological connection between them in gestational surrogacy. The baby cannot show any physical resemblance to the surrogate mother. In gestational surrogacy, egg and sperm are collected from either donors or intended parents, who are responsible for the genetic transformation of information to the baby.

Myth 2: Surrogate Can Take Custody of Baby Whenever She Wants.

Truth: Surrogate mother has no legal rights on the baby. Before starting the surrogacy process, a legal contract is signed between both parties. In the legal contract, this clause is clearly denied that the surrogate has no parental rights on the baby. Infect, the surrogate knows and agrees upon the agreement and usually committed to it.

Myth 3: Surrogacy is Unethical and it is wrong to sell Womb to Give Birth to Someone Else’s Child.

Truth: Surrogacy is completely ethical as this is the way to helping intended parents, who cannot conceive, to have their biological kids. And giving birth to a whole new life can not be unethical in any way. Though surrogate mother is compensated financially, there is nothing wrong about it if both parties are agreed and purpose of both parties is served. The best way to find a surrogate is through a professional surrogacy agency that assures the human and legal rights of the surrogate and intended parents. Generally, surrogates from surrogacy agencies are quite professional and aware of the process.

Myth 4: Surrogacy is Selfish While the Couple can adopt a Child.

Truth: Surrogacy is not a selfish act; this is a personal decision of a couple about how they want to have a baby. It helps the couple to have their biological baby from the mother’s womb. It is true that there are many children who needed to be adopted and taken care of, but the adopted child is not genetically related to the intended parent.

Myth 5: There is No Emotional Connection between Surrogate Baby and Intended Parents.

Truth: In surrogacy, the couple and surrogate take care and work together at each step of the process to have a healthy baby. The future parents observe the complete journey of their child throughout the process and build the emotional bond between them naturally.

Myth 6: Surrogacy is an Expensive Process and Only Rich Can Afford This.

Truth: Though surrogacy is a little costly as compared to other infertility treatments as it involves the cost of a surrogacy agency to find a surrogate mother and spend on her fees. In some cases, a close friend or family member offers the intended parents to carry their child. Thus, the expenses of a surrogacy agency can be saved but it can take time to search a surrogate.
