First Generation

The first-generation (E84) BMW X1 was produced from 2009 until 2014 and was available in rear-wheel drive (sDrive), or all-wheel drive (xDrive) variants. The exterior of the X1 features a kidney grille flanked by round Xenon headlights with white LED corona rings DRLs. At the rear, it has a two-piece tail light, a spoiler with a stoplight, and a prominent underguard for a sporty look and off-road appearance.

The cabin is spacious with top-quality materials, comfortable and supportive seats, as well as plenty of technology which includes regenerative braking, parking sensors, climate control, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The luggage compartment offers 420 liters and the rear seats can be split folded in a 40:20:40 for a maximum of 1350 liters.

The X1 was available in a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine fitted in the sDrive28i and xDrive28i, while the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine came fitted in xDrive35i. Diesel versions came fitted with either a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged (sDrive16d, sDrive18d, sDrive20d, sDrive20d Efficient Dynamics) or twin-turbo (xDrive23d or xDrive25d) with 180 hp and 215 hp respectively.

Second Generation

The second-generation (F48) of the BMW X1 was introduced in 2015 and was now available in front-wheel-drive (sDrive) and all-wheel-drive (xDrive) as an option. The X1 F48 was available in SE, Sport, and X Line trims, while the M Sport trim was added late. The exterior offers a new grille, redesigned headlights, and a lower trapezoidal air intake. A shark fin antenna is placed on the rear part of the roof, an enlarged spoiler and the two-piece tail lights are all LED now.

The interior emphasizing clarity over design flourishes with outstanding quality, a roomy and versatile cabin, and a 6.5-inch (8.8-inch optional) iDrive system. The 505-liter boot is good enough but can be extended by folding the rear seat for a maximum of 1550 liters. Standard features include a DAB radio, an electric tailgate, rear parking sensors, automatic wipers and headlights, and 17-inch alloy wheels. While the Sport trim adds front sports seats, LED ambient cabin lighting, 18-inch alloys, and sportier detailing. The X Line offers leather trim, heated front seats, and LED headlights, while M Sport gets a body kit, cloth trim, Alcantara upholstery, and sports suspension.

In 2019, the X1 F48 received a mid-life update with new interior tech, styling updates, and a boost under the hood. The most evident changes are the new headlight graphics that replace the previous round ones, new large kidney grilles, a new bumper, and new clear indicator units at the rear. The infotainment system was upgraded into an 8.8-inch screen and an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen and can take commands via either voice commands, the touchscreen, or the iDrive click wheel. In the same year, the X1 xDrive25e PHEV was released fitted with a combination of a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor with 220 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The X1 engine comes equipped with turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines, diesel or gasoline, and a PHEV introduced later. The base model offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter three cylinders petrol with 141 hp fitted in the sDrive18i. The xDrive25i comes fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine with 228 hp while the sDrive20i and xDrive 20i with 189 hp. Diesel options are the turbocharged 1.5-liter three cylinders with 115 hp fitted in the sDrive16d and the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 hp fitted on the xDrive25d. This engine is also fitted on the sDrive18d and sDrive20d with 148 hp and 188 hp respectively, paired with either a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch, or an 8-speed automatic transmission.
