Dyspepsia, commonly known as indigestion, happens because of a problem with the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach. The food we consume gets broken down into smaller and digestible units by the enzymes and acids produced throughout the digestive tract. However, underproduction or overproduction of such acids may lead to a digestive disorder.

Indigestion and hyperacidity are common disorders associated with the digestive system. Indigestion may be triggered because of several reasons, including consumption of extra spicy or fatty foods, anxiety, stress, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers and stomach infection. On the other hand, hyperacidity results due to overproduction of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Both indigestion and hyperacidity may lead to symptoms of acidity such as burning sensation in the stomach, chest and throat, acidic taste in the mouth, abdominal pain, bloating and vomiting. The extra production of acid lead to acid reflux, during which the acid reaches the throat of the affected individual. It may wear out or burn the internal lining of the oesophagus, a condition that may require medications for treatment.

Even though there are several medicines available in the form of tablets and syrups that help cure symptoms of acidity and indigestion, there are home remedies that can be quickly carried out at home to gain effective relief against both these conditions. Some of these inexpensive and easy-to-do acidity cures are described below.

Hot water: Drinking a glass full of hot water after every meal helps cure indigestion and hyperacidity. This acidity cure works by washing away all the oils and fats that get attached to the digestive tract when someone takes a heavy, fatty meal.

Avoid juice and dairy: People who frequently suffer from indigestion may be intolerant to lactose and fructose. Avoid consuming dairy products in case it makes you feel bloated and gassy immediately after consumption. In addition, fructose in fruit juices may also reach the colon, undigested, and make you feel bloated. As a best practice, always take fruit juice along with a meal.

Chewing gum: Chewing a sugar-free gum for 20 to 30 minutes after a meal stimulates production of excess saliva that helps dilute the excessive acid produced in case of hyperacidity. Dilution of acid thus helps relieve symptoms of acidity.

Fennel tea: Drinking a cup of tea prepared by adding two teaspoons of crushed fennel seeds in hot water helps cure indigestion. It is one of the best acidity cure that provides quick relief against indigestion and hyperacidity symptoms.

Aloe juice: Aloe Vera has excellent soothing and calming properties that help treat burns in the digestive tract that may arise because of hyperacidity. Aloe juice works by reducing inflammation in the digestive tract and also provides relief against heartburn.

Baking soda: This is one of the best acidity cure that acts as a natural antacid and provides relief against symptoms of acidity. Baking soda neutralized excess acid produced in case of hyperacidity and relieves heartburn instantly. Add one teaspoon of baking soda in a glassful of water and drink it immediately for quick relief.
