In an email, Mungoven told the BBC, "During the Kovid-19 pandemic new dimensions were seen. Many people who criticized government systems online for their failure to deal with the pandemic were arrested under this law."

However, in view of the ever increasing criticism, Bangladesh Law Minister Anisul Hull recently said that steps are being taken to stop the misuse of this law and no one will be arrested under this law until the investigation is completed.

Sheikh Hasina has been under the Awami League government in Bangladesh since 2008.

He is credited with bringing stability to a politically unstable Bangladesh, strengthening economic growth, and tightening religious extremism.

During his leadership, Bangladesh's economy has seen an average growth of six to seven percent every year in the last ten years.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has become the second largest exporter of readymade garments after China.
