All You Need To Know About Some Of The Non-Ferrous Chemicals

There are various types of chemicals used in our day to day life. These chemicals are often used either in combined form or as some reagents. 1. Antimony Trioxide:

This nonferrous chemical is an inorganic compound that is found in nature as the minerals Senarmontite and Valentinite. Many nonferrous chemical manufacturers in India produce Antimony Trioxide by using stibnite ores (Antimony Trisulfide) or as a by-product of lead smelting. This chemical can also be formulated using Antimony Trichloride that is derived from Stibnite.   • This chemical is utilized as a pigment for other antimony compounds.
  • It acts as an ingredient in fire retardant paints. Generally, paint manufacturers use this chemical as a white pigment. It is also combined with other substances to produce yellow pigments.
  • It is used in the fire-retardant composition of paper, plastics, textiles, and rubbers.
  • It is also used as a catalyst in the chemical industry.
  • Glass and ceramic manufacturers use this chemical as an improver. Glass manufacturers often use it to remove bubbles (degasser) and as a fining agent.
  • This chemical is used as an opacifier in enameling and porcelain products.
  • It is used to improve the performance of halogenated flame-retardants by freeing halogenated radicals to lower the gas phase chain reaction of flames dispersed.
  • It is utilized as a flocculant in Titanium Dioxide preparation.

2. Barium Carbonate:

Barium carbonate is a nonferrous chemical that is made commercially from barium sulfide either by passing carbon dioxide at 40 degrees Celsius to 90 degrees Celsius or by treatment with sodium carbonate at 60 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius (soda ash method). This compound is also known as witherite. It has a variety of uses-

  • This compound is extensively used in the ceramics industry as an ingredient in glazes.
  • It performs as a flux, crystallizing agent, and matting and often combined with certain coloring oxides to formulate unique colors.
  • In the tile, brick, earthenware and pottery industries, barium carbonate is added to clays to precipitate soluble salts (magnesium sulfate and calcium sulfate) that lead to efflorescence.

3. Barium Chloride:

This nonferrous chemical is the inorganic compound and is one of the most common water-soluble salts of barium. Like other known barium salts, this salt is toxic and gives a yellow-green coloration to a flame. This chemical is also hygroscopic. Although the toxicity of the chemical limits its applicability, it has a number of uses-

  • The salt is used to make Barium Chloride Dihydrate, which is used in wastewater treatment, the production of oil lubricants, PVC stabilizers, and barium chromate and barium fluoride.
  • As it is an affordable, soluble salt of barium, it finds broad application in the various laboratories.
  • Barium Chloride is often used as a test for sulfate ion.
  • Barium Chloride is primarily used in the purification of brine solution in caustic chlorine plants and also in the production of heat treatment salts.
  • It is used in case hardening of steel, in the formulation of pigments, and in the production of other barium salts.
  • This nonferrous chemical is also used in fireworks to impart a bright green color.

4. Lithium Carbonate:

This inorganic compound is the lithium salt of carbonate. This is a white salt widely used in the processing of metal oxides and the treatment of mood disorders. This compound is in the WHO’s list of essential medicines and used for the treatment of the bipolar disorder. It is an important industrial chemical and has a variety of uses-

  • The chemical forms low-melting fluxes with silica and other materials. Glasses made from lithium carbonate are very useful in ovenware.
  • It is an ingredient in both low-fire and high-fire ceramic glaze. The alkaline properties of lithium carbonate are conducive to change the state of metal oxide colorants in glaze especially, red iron oxide
  • Cement sets more quickly when manufactured with lithium carbonate, and is useful for tile adhesives.
  • When added to aluminum trifluoride, lithium carbonate forms LiF which gives a superior electrolyte for the processing of aluminum.
  • It is also used in the production of most lithium-ion battery cathodes that are made of lithium cobalt oxide.
  • It is used to treat mania that is the elevated phase of bipolar disorder.
