All You Need to Know About Sleep Apnea

A pause in breathing while sleeping is known as sleep apnea. There can also be a pause for a few seconds to a few minutes. This problem generally happens at the night time. This is also spelled as apnoea. Often a person affected with sleep apnea is found to snort loudly. As soon as the pause in breathing stops the snoring sound is heard. Somebody who is having the problem is definitely going to have sleepless nights or insufficient sleep. He or she may tend to sleep during the day. Even children can be affected by the problem. This may cause them problem while they are in school.

What are the types of sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea has many forms. They are central, obstructive and mixed sleep apnea. Most central sleep apnea (CSA) is caused due to lesser efforts in breathing. While one with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) needs to be obese or have a family history of the allergy. OSA people will have a blockage in their airflow.

How is the problem detected?

Generally, none of the sufferers are aware of the existence of the problem. A family member is the one who can notice the problem in a person. Even overnight sleep studies are done to diagnose the problem in a person.

What are the side effects of the disease?

If sleep apnea treatments are not provided to a person that can pose dangerous effects. This increases the risk of diabetes, heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, motor vehicle collisions and obesity. Irregular heartbeat is also another side effect.

How can the problems be treated?

The disease symptoms can be treated if changes are included in the lifestyle of the patient. This may be stopping to smoke, reducing addiction to alcohol, losing weight and sleeping on one side.  Other forms of treatment are breathing devices, surgery and mouthpieces. Continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP equipment is an alternative device that can help to reduce the problem.

Which is the best treatment?

CPAP is considered so far to be the best treatment. This one is generally the first treatment which is given to a person. The machine prevents the closing of the airway. It is said that the pressure might become low of a person using this device. But there is nothing to worry, with use the person can expect to become comfortable. Experts advise that the device should be used on a regular basis or else the disease will return back.
