There has been a slight reduction in students opting for research in Science. Research can lead to an attractive career option for students. Keeping this view in mind, the Government of India brought in a scheme known as Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY Exam).

Each year through the KVPY Exam, an opportunity is given to nearly 40,000 bright and talented students who are trained to become world-class scientists of the future for India. Out of this number, about 400 candidates are selected as KVPY scholars and are given a scholarship.

Although there are many scholarship and competitive exams held in the country each year, the KVPY exam holds special significance for the growth of scientific community. Each year several e-learning websites publish KVPY online test series or mock papers which are curated for such candidates.

Background

The KVPY Exam began in 1999 by Government of India to encourage Basic Sciences, Medicine and Engineering students to take up research as career. Students are selected from their current batch of Class XI and Class XII. Some of the areas of research for those clearing the entrance exam are: B Sc./B.S./B.Stat., M Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, etc.

Upon clearing the entrance test, the students receive an annual fellowship of Rs 80,000/- per year for three years during their under-graduate course. And, Rs. 1.1 lacs for 2 years of Post-graduate course.

The qualifying candidates get to spend time in premiere scientific institutes, attend lectures and sessions by scientists, engineers, and medical experts. They also get to interact with scientists in work laboratories and get help from some of the most brilliant minds on their research.

Apart from this, the students can gain direct entry to reputed colleges like IISER (Indian Institutes of Scientific Education and Research) and IISC colleges. With an authorised identification card, the KVPY fellows can access national laboratories and libraries too.

Other Facts

The students have to be ready for an objective type KVPY entrance exam divided into two parts with four segments viz. Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics. Mock papers are very useful to prepare as negative marking is applicable in this exam. Also online test series allows students to be familiar with the atmosphere of the actual test.
