Before you start learning to drive, you need to secure your provisional driving license. In fact, you need to get your provisional driving license even before you head for your theory test.

Here is a quick guide below that outlines everything you need to know about a provisional driving license:

Getting Your Provisional License- What Does It Take?

You need to be at least 17 years old to get your provisional driving license. However, you can apply for your provisional license for up to three months before you intend to start driving. The exception here is that if you are in receipt of the higher rate mobility element of the Disability Living Allowance, you can start driving at 16.

The provisional driving license costs around £50 and it doesn’t just cover your car. It is also valid for motorcycles and mopeds. You can either apply for your provisional driving license online or through the form D1 here.

If you apply online, your provisional license is usually approved within a week. However, it could take up to three weeks through the post. You must also meet the following criteria to be able to apply online:

·         Not to be prevented from driving for any reason

·         Be a resident of Great Britain

·         Meet the minimum eyesight requirements

·         Be able to pay £50 through a credit or debit card

·         Have  a valid UK passport or other form of photo identity

·         An address where you have lived for at least the past three years

What Does A Provisional License Allow You To Do?

Once you have cleared your theory test, the provisional license allows you to drive your car provided that you meet the following conditions:

·         You are always accompanied by a driver who is 21 years old or over

·         The accompanying driver has a license similar to your category of driving

·         The accompanying driver must have had the license for at least three years

·         The driver must also be in a fit state to drive

·         You need to put up “L” plates of correct size on your car

·         You are cannot drive on the motorway

Once you have successfully passed your test, you can drive without these restrictions, even if you still need to receive your full license.

These things are all you need to know about a provisional driving license. Even if you fail your driving license and get a waiting time for the next date that stretches over a month, there is still something you can do.
