A Guide to Outdoor Mushroom Log Cultivation

Around 2000 years ago, mushroom cultivation started on logs, but recently it has earned immense popularity. The instructions are related to growing oyster mushrooms, which take almost 6 to 12 months. The taste that you receive from Oyster mushroom is much better than any other substrates. Take a look at the entire process.  

1.      Bagging 

Mushroom dowels, usually 17cm in diameter, with 33cm long is kept in damp conditions covered with grey or white mould. The appearance is fluffy, and the mycelium is known as the Oyster mushroom Log. After that, the mushroom dowels are inserted in a bag, which is sealed with natural sealing and non-toxic wax. Soon after bagging, it is kept for high-pressure stabilization that helps the mushroom to grow. 

2.      Cooling and Inoculation

After that, use the dowels as early as possible because the mycelium will reduce after some time. You can also store the dowels in a cooling area if you wish to use it afterward. The best company follows a specified process to cultivate Oyster mushroom Log, which is quite popular. The next step is to place the log in the inoculation chamber to intend to inoculate. After the process is over, you need to insert a dowel with clean hands while making a hole in the surface. 

3.      Cultivation 

Ones all the dowels are inserted, you need to put some drop of hot wax to sterilize and seal the surface. Make sure that you place the log in a damp and cool place for at least 12 weeks. Ensure you do not cover them with any material to see if the end of the log shows mycelia growth. If you see the mycelia growth at the bottom and top surface, it indicates the mycelium growth is complete. 

4.      Fruiting

Leave the log so that the fruit can grow naturally, and oyster logs produce two crops twice a year during autumn and spring, and it continues producing mushroom for five years. Try sprinkling of water to ensure the fruiting of mushroom takes place. Within some days, you will see that mushroom has started erupting from the surface. 

5.      Store the log 

Keep the material in such a place where you can keep track of the mushroom flushes growing. If you are not rewarded with mushrooms, wait for some time as some logs might take longer. Be careful, your oyster logs should not get too dried or too wet, and that’s why; it’s better to store the product in the shaded area. Keeping the material in the shaded area as it offers the right condition for the mushrooms to grow. 

And finally!

Growing outdoors may attract mites, slugs, fly, etc., and that’s why; it’s better to grow them in specialized conditions. As a result, it would also be free from harmful pesticides. Make sure the place where you are growing has good ventilation, little light, and humid conditions. In case you see that the end product has a deformed appearance, it means you need to improve the growing environment.
