AI agents are fast becoming an integral part of healthcare operations, with adoption projected to reach more than 30% by 2028. Healthcare AI agents can operate autonomously, performing complex duties without human intervention while continuously refining their performance. They are more advanced than generic AI, which are public-facing models that are restricted by data scope, limited access, and regulatory challenges like HIPAA compliance.

Today, AI agents in healthcare are being deployed across internal and external workflows, especially in terms of administrative operations such as enhanced benefit verification, insurance discovery, and insurance verification. These agents significantly reduce administrative burdens for entities like health systems and provider groups, resulting in revenue gains exceeding 20%, more than 50 hours saved weekly, and cost reductions between 40% and 70% as well as referral processing times shrinking to just 24 seconds. On the clinical side, patients gain personalized treatment, timely diagnoses, and more interaction with care teams, resulting in higher overall patient satisfaction.

At least 70% of healthcare workers expect AI agents to become an integral part of healthcare in the next few years. However, for this shift to happen, AI solutions must reduce administrative burden, boost staff performance, grant access to accurate data, be easy to employ, have sufficient training resources, and provide trustworthy results. AI agents that are tailored to the specific needs of the healthcare industry have the potential to reduce inefficiencies, cut costs, and improve patient outcomes.
