Applying for a new passport in India is a structured and document-intensive process, but sometimes, due to personal, professional, or legal reasons, an applicant may need to cancel their passport application. If you’ve submitted your form online, paid the fee, or even booked an appointment — don’t worry. The Indian Passport Seva system provides options for cancellation or withdrawal of applications, though certain conditions apply.

In this guide, we explain how to cancel your passport application, what fees are refundable (if any), and how to handle reapplication.

Can a Passport Application Be Cancelled?

Yes. You can cancel your new passport application at any point before the appointment is completed at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). However, once the application has been processed at the passport office (biometrics taken or police verification started), cancellation is no longer possible.

Reasons for Cancelling a Passport Application

There are several valid reasons why applicants may wish to cancel their passport applications:

  • Wrong information entered in the application form

  • Address mismatch

  • Incorrect document uploads

  • Change in travel plans

  • Wanting to apply under a different category (Tatkaal instead of normal)

  • Application made under the wrong passport office

  • Lost supporting documents

  • Shift to a new city or country

How to Cancel a Passport Application Online

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Log in to your account at the Passport Seva Portal

  2. Navigate to the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” tab

  3. Find your application in the list

  4. Click on “Delete” or “Withdraw” (option depends on the stage of your application)

  5. Confirm your cancellation when prompted

Once deleted, the application cannot be retrieved. You must submit a fresh application if needed later.

What Happens After Cancelling Your Application?

  • The application reference number (ARN) becomes invalid

  • Your appointment slot is released

  • You cannot use the same ARN again

  • You will need to fill a new form, generate a new ARN, and book a fresh appointment if applying again

Can You Cancel After Paying the Fee?

Yes, you can cancel your application even after making the payment. However, it is important to note:

⚠️ The passport application fee is non-refundable, even if the application is cancelled or withdrawn before the appointment.

You will not receive a refund unless there was a technical error during payment or the fee was charged twice.

Can I Reschedule Instead of Cancelling?

Yes, if your only concern is the appointment date, there’s no need to cancel the entire application. Instead, you can reschedule the appointment:

  • Allowed twice in a year (including cancellation and rescheduling)

  • Use the “Manage Appointment” tab to choose a new date/time

  • No extra fee is charged unless you miss or exceed the allowed limits

When Cancellation Is Not Possible

  • Once the appointment is attended

  • After the application is “under processing” by RPO

  • Once police verification has started

  • After a Tatkaal application has been verified and issued

  • If the passport has already been dispatched

In such cases, your only option is to apply for reissue, not cancellation.

What If I Made a Mistake in the Application Form?

If your application is submitted with wrong information (like incorrect name, DOB, or address), and you haven’t booked an appointment yet:

  • Cancel the application and apply afresh

  • If appointment is booked, cancel and forfeit the fee (if required)

  • Book a new slot with the corrected details

Never provide false details hoping to correct them later. It may lead to rejection or even legal action.

What About Tatkaal Application Cancellations?

Tatkaal passport applications can also be cancelled before attending the appointment. However:

  • Tatkaal fees are non-refundable

  • You will lose priority access if you cancel

  • If urgent travel plans are canceled, ensure timely withdrawal of your application

Will My Records Be Affected by a Cancellation?

No, cancelling a new passport application will not affect your future applications. The Passport Seva system doesn’t treat cancellations as black marks. However, if you submit false documents, skip appointments repeatedly, or fail police verification, it may impact your passport credibility.

How to Apply Again After Cancelling?

If you wish to reapply after cancellation:

  • Log in to Passport Seva Portal

  • Fill out a new application form

  • Generate a new ARN

  • Upload required documents

  • Book a fresh appointment

  • Pay the application fee again (no transfer from the old ARN)
