The Dangers Facing Americas Trees

Trees are one of America’s most important natural resources. The country is home to over 300 billion trees of different varieties, but each plays an essential role in our ecosystem and economy. They help sustain various industries, from paper and lumber to food and medicine. They also support wildlife, prevent erosion, and even provide the oxygen we breathe.

 

U.S biomes are diverse, so there are some states where a tree may not be seen for miles, namely the Dakotas and Nebraska. In contrast, some states, such as Maine and New Hampshire, have over 80% of their landmass covered by trees. The species of trees also vary widely depending on the part of the country. For example, mammoth trees such as the Coastal Redwood and Douglas Fir can be found in the Pacific Northwest, standing over 300 feet tall. The Emancipation Oak, found in Virginia, is larger in diameter, spanning over 100 feet. 

Unfortunately, these beautiful and essential trees are facing many threats, both from human activities and natural threats. States like Georgia and Alabama have lost a quarter of their forests to deforestation. Each year, invasive pests harm forest ecosystems and cost $40 billion in damages. With over 7 million acres burned in 2024 alone, wildfires represent another growing threat that has ravaged states such as California and Alaska. People must practice sustainable management of these trees to ensure their continued growth, and safe removal is done by tree experts.
