Bajjo (my elder sister) owns at least 3 pairs of every breed of shoe that is available in the market. Be it stilettos, or flat pumps, you name it! Her wardrobe looks a lot like a jungle where her dresses form a canopied roof (yes, she has got a thousand of those too!), and the shoes form disciplined lines of a hundred different species of wild life living within the jungle! On the contrary, my brother (who is just 24 by the way) owns a few rags plus a pair of old shoes and some funky flip-flops.

I do get disturbed by bajjo's strange obsession but I absolutely detest bhai’s 'beggar-ish' ways. What he and most of you guys need to maintain is a thing called 'balance' in your lifeless closet. Confused? I’ll make it simple; all you need are the following types of shoes and your style-deprived closet will be good as new.

Chukkas: Chukkas are shoes that are actually inspired by the boots worn by polo players. They reach up to your ankle and include only 2 to 3 pairs of eyelets for lace. They’re usually made of calfskin leather or suede while the sole is made of rubber. Chukkas are available in offbeat colors, with disagreeing laces, collars, eyelets or soles. The more contrast between colors, the trendier it looks.

Dress Shoes: Every man should own at least two pairs of dress shoes, since you can not wear brown dress shoes under your black suit – believe me, it’s a serious fashion sin. Also while you’re out shopping for dress shoes, always make sure that they’re made of original leather and the sole is made of leather as well. Don’t forget to see the stitching – it shouldn’t be messy and noticeable.

Flip Flops: They were probably the only kind of shoes worn by men centuries ago. Then they were worn by the slaves in Africa, Japanese women during World War II and then by the average American teenagers. Today, the hip class of males in our society enjoys wearing them. Flip flops come in variant colors and forms - you may choose any funky pair which suits you best.

Loafers: Go lace-less with style! Loafers are low shoes i.e. they do not cover your ankles and have a separate sole plus a saddle. They’re easy to wear and offer a lot of options to choose from. What you really must see is their fabric. They are either made of leather or suede. Loafer shoes in Pakistan are usually made from leather are strong and can withstand all kinds of weather conditions while suede loafers must be kept away from moisture.

Sneakers: The most difficult class of shoes to buy is sneakers as it offers so many distinct sub-types to choose from. You can either go for the classic lace sneakers or slip-ons, low top sneakers or high top, canvas sneakers or even leather ones. The options just seem quite endless.

The best part about owning these is that you won’t end up being bankrupt like bajjo. Pairing these shoes with the right dresses on the right occasion can truly uplift your whole look. If you fancy the weird look and you think you can pull it off easily, then go for it! Just make sure you don’t end up wearing flip-flops under your $100 suit at a formal event – things like that can really mess with your first impression.
