Designing an office is often a more complicated and more expensive task than a business owner plans it to be. The office needs to fulfill a lot of roles and functions at once. It needs to be a productive place of business, but it should also reflect how your business plans to present itself to clients and customers.

Striking a balance between the two approaches should be your main goal. That way, the office will be both comfortable to work in and send a message about your business to its competitors and customers alike.

Company culture

The office needs to be designed with your company culture in mind. It may seem like company culture is an abstract notion while an office is something rather tangible. However, an office design could be used to promote and create a company culture and to turn it into something that affects day-to-day work tasks.

This is the most noticeable in organizing communal spaces. If your office is organized around communal spaces, your way of work will be communal as well. At the same time, using blues and greens could help make the meetings and deliberation easier since these colors are soothing and relaxing.

Storage and auxiliary space

An office always needs extra storage and auxiliary space. These aren’t the features many worry about, but they are important and even essential for running day to day operations. Working too hard and dealing with burnout syndrome is a reality of almost all modern businesses. The office should be designed to prevent and help with burnout as soon as it appears. This is best done by having a room designated to help employees recharge their batteries.

This could be an office garden used for walks and meditations or it can be a game room in which your employees could let go and have fun. It’s important that the employees take part in making these decisions and to add new features to this part of the office when they are needed.

Personalize

The office is there to be used by your employees and they should have a chance to leave a mark on it. When it comes to individual spaces and offices, it’s fine to allow each of the employees to personalize the space in terms of art and decorations. The same should be done with the communal spaces but in cooperation between the employees.

Set up a few ground rules in regards to these decorations, mostly so that they could be removed if someone else starts using the space and wants to add their own.

An office needs to be designed with its purpose in mind. It can be many different things at different times. For instance, it’s obviously a place of business, but it should also be a place where your employees could come together and relax and bond together. It’s also a great way to project your values in a way that’s noticeable by the clients and customers alike.

Try to figure out how the office will be used and what’s important to your employees and start setting up the office with these goals and aspirations in mind since that’s what its main function should be.
