continued from part 1... http://www.apsense.com/article/161332.html

Web Biz Solutions did well for us over the next three years. Being a programmer and having learned Perl from the previous owner, I was able to make several modifications to enhance the opportunities for members to advertise.

Around 2009 the realm of traffic exchanges began to change. It became more affordable to own a traffic exchange, and many people saw dollar signs before their eyes. Bonus' became bigger to entice members to surf more. It became a race for traffic/credits instead of the quality of the views and signups and purchases of programs and products. When 1 owner would close up shop, 2 more would take its place, and more and more bonus's started going out to keep members active. Pay to click became even more popular. Instead of viewing ads for potential opportunities and earning credits to show other members your advertisements, traffic exchanges started paying members to click. for minimal amounts of cash.

So instead of getting good quality traffic to your affiliate program with the opportunity to earn real dollars, members became interested in earning pennies for clicks. Timers started decreasing to give bonus hunters and penny clickers more bang for their buck. Games and surfing contests started becoming popular. These were implemented by owners in order to maintain levels of traffic. It worked... look at the top 100k Alexa rankings... there are many traffic exchanges among them... extrahits4u being among the very top... EasyHits4U... a penny clicking exchange with an Alexa ranking of 1529i as of this writing! Thats a huge amount of traffic! Tim Linden tracked  567,724 hits tracked on the last 6 week report from TrafficExchangeList. What that report doesn't tell you is the number of conversions... views to sales or signups...

Today there are hundreds of traffic exchanges online. Member bases from 250k+ to 1... I believe there is a new one starting everyday. You can buy a traffic exchange in a box for less than $200. Used to be you couldn't touch one for less than $2000!  So all these generic exchanges are popping up. Visions of dollar signs dancing in the owners heads... without spending hardly anything. No clever or unique site design, no advertising budget to promote their new generic site. Those that actually invest in their exchanges have a chance of survival, but there is no one getting rich off of traffic exchanges. Most owners that I know have several other programs that they use to supplement their income, and invest most of the income from the exchange, back into the exchange.

So what's my point in all this babbling?

Traffic Exchanges Work!    lol,    bet you weren't expecting that...
they always have, and they always will... both members and owners merely need to adapt to the changes that come around... just like anything else.

As an owner, I do many things to ensure quality traffic.

Surfing: I limit the amount of time a member can spend surfing. It is not uncommon for me to visit a sites stats and see members surfing 1000's of pages... you do the math... 8 second timer average 1000 pages viewed... Owners are or will be changing the way contests and bonus's are held or given to ensure that members are looking at pages. Coupon codes are placed in rotation. Downloads of ebooks and other products, etc.

Content. Todays marketer wants more opportunities available then just the original you look at mine I'll look at yours premise of the original traffic exchange. Social integration, training, branding, and other ways of exposure are all becoming popular in quality traffic exchanges. Owners are looking for ways to provide a "stickiness" to their programs that provides multiple ways for members to learn, share and grow as well as market their products or services.

Awareness: Many owners are non aware of the members needs or problems. There is no customer service, the exchange is simply a way for them to earn what they think is good money, or build their own personal list. Watch the red flag for a limited way to contact the owner. they should be accessible if you have a problem, concern or need.

Traffic: The flow of quality traffic should be monitored daily by the owner. It is not an easy task. An exchange should deliver more hits than it does credits. If that's not the case, then it won't be long before surfing deteriorates to a minimum as members have more credits than they can use. Si it takes a tricky balance to continue smooth operation of the exchange.

As a member, check the stats of the exchange. Most have them prominently displayed on the site. They are proud that they deliver 100k hits a day. Dig a little deeper, however and discover how many members are surfing exuberant amounts of pages everyday.  I would much rather have 100 members surfing 100 pages than 10 surfing 1000!

Brand yourself! If you are endorsing an affiliate product or service, or have your own... don't be afraid to say so! Put your name on the page, add your image. Create a testimonial if its an affiliate product. Be proud to be advertising it! Create your own or use a service to create pages. My exchange at 1 Modern Solution has an entire section devoted to branding. Called The Branding Machine, it creates pages not only for 1MS, but other programs as well.

View pages as you would like yours viewed. Whether there is a contests,  bonus's, or anything else available from the owner treat your fellow members advertisements with respect. Surf for content not for credits. If all members did this there would be plenty of credits to go around and make it worthwhile.

Utilize some of the other resources provided by owners. Social integration. Facebook like walls, bookmarking sites in rotation. Opening a new page you want to view later, Banner and Text advertisements are fantastic ways to brand you and your business. They don't generate many click throughs, but the in your face branding is priceless. on 1 Modern Solution they are not only on the surfbar, but on every page of your members area.

Many exchanges offer training on how to best use the exchanges, the features found within them. Look through your members area.s and find the 'hidden' gems. I know there are many at 1MS... Botoom line is that traffic exchanges do work. Do your homework, look for red flags, and most importantly is use them as an advertising mechanism they were designed for and not a penny pinching money earner. Yes, you can earn money in exchanges via commissions on purchases in your downline, and this is an important facet of exchanges. Don't however surf others advertisements expecting to earn change... it defeats the purpose.

They do work if you work them properly, and find the one that are properly administered, no matter what their size.
