Indeed it is. I know these e-cards already and they are great.
1. Easy to use for the sender and 2. a joy when you receive it, especially as birthday greetings :) - people are really thankful for it as it seems to be a little bit 'out' to send congrats.
And here's another idea for local online events: Send your friends a written invite - once it was quite normal, nowadays with phone, email, sms... a little card like this transmit value: value for the receiver and value to the event. :)
