Many schools, at the present time, are having difficulty stretching their dollars to meet all the necessary expenses of education. This has resulted in eliminating activities such as sports, music and other programs. Many parents are interested in school fundraising activities to reinstate some of the things that have been discontinued.

In previous years, when funds were needed for band uniforms, a football trip, or some other activity, parents came forth with bake sales, raffles and dinners. This interested the school members, the parents and the children and the money needed was raised. Unfortunately, a lot more money is needed today and it needs to be gathered quickly.

When trying to raise money, on a large scale, there are certain techniques that must be used if it is to be successful. The entire community must respond for an event to be raise money. That means that just sending home a note with a child and putting up a few posters at the school will not work. The first thing that must be decided is what the money is for. In today's situation that can be a pretty big project, such as reinstating the sports program.

Nothing can be done without teamwork. Having school personnel and other parents involved is great but it is an extra plus to get someone who is well known in the community and is influential. It might be the mayor, a doctor, fire chief or someone else, as long as they are known and respected for their views. Other community members or clubs are also a good addition.

Once a group is formed, plans must be laid for advertising, securing a location, getting supplies and other necessities. If a dinner is involved then volunteers are asked for in order to purchase the food, to cook it, serve it and clean up. By everyone having a small job to do or sharing a job, it can be done very easily.

Dinners take a lot of work but can be successful if handled in a professional manner. Some formal affairs take bids on desserts or raffle items. These usually are rather expensive dinner tickets so something other than spaghetti must be served. A general dinner, at a reasonable price, can also be profitable, especially if there is a raffle. A donation box or donation envelopes on the tables should always be available for those who wish to give a little more.

Some schools still have the students raise money by selling magazines or other items door to door. This is no longer a good thing to do. It is not only dangerous but raises very little money. However, getting them interested in a big event, by making posters, signs or other things will not only motivate them but the parents and family friends, as well.

Records show thousands and thousands of dollars have been successfully obtained by school fundraising. Having an entire community involved in such a project is the secret for success. Having it a fun time for everyone means they will eagerly look forward to the next event to see what the team will come up with next.
