According to the Tree Care Industry Association, "tree pruning is the single best 'investment' a property owner or community can make to ensure the survival and lengthen the lifespan of their trees." Tree trimming is done for a number of reasons including:

1. Remove diseased or damaged branches,

2. Thin the crown of the tree allowing room for new growth and reduce potential for storm damage,

3. Reduce the height (possibly growing near Power Lines),

4. Remove lower branches obstructing pathways or grass growth, and

5. Help shape the trees into a form that is aesthetically pleasing to you. Proper tree trimming begins when a tree is approximately one year old, and continues throughout its life.

The timing of pruning is an important factor that should be considered. Spring is a good time to prune trees for overall shape. Summer pruning is an effective way to force new growth. Fall is a good time to clear away dead areas. Since trees are dormant in the winter, pruning of deciduous trees is best done in the winter months.

Regardless of the time of the year, it may be necessary to prune a tree that you are transplanting. It is important to maintain a balance between the growth of the top of the tree and the growth of the root base when transplanting trees. If you are trimming the top portion of the tree, the root base should be trimmed in proportion.

When properly completed, tree trimming or tree pruning will enhance the beauty of your trees and can increase the value of your property. Make a lasting investment by requesting a Certified Arborist to evaluate and care for your trees.
