Tree Disease - Pine Wilt is on the Move!

A recent report on Pine Wilt from Kansas City's Channel 5 News stated "A disease that has killed thousands of pine trees in eastern Kansas is migrating west and beginning to take hold in central parts of the state". Pine Wilt is a tree disease caused by a microscopic worm that bores into healthy pines, primarily Scots pines, and interrupts the flow of sap to tree branches. The lack of the nutrient sap will cause the branches to turn brown and die, eventually killing the tree.

Sadly, this can kill a tree in as little as three months; there is no treatment currently available to combat this tree disease however, there is a preventative treatment to help avoid this disease." Experts agree that the only way to remove the disease is to remove the tree. Trees suffering from Pine Wilt should be removed by a trained tree removal specialist and professionally disposed of to avoid spreading the disease to other trees.

 However, a browning pine does not necessarily mean the tree has Pine Wilt disease. Tip Blight and Needle Blight are two tree diseases that primarily affect Austrian, White and Mugo Pines. These diseases also cause browning in Pines. Unlike the deadly Pine Wilt, there are treatments available to combat the disease.

Tip Blight or Needle Blight is treatable with a series of fungicide treatments applied by a professional technician. It is highly recommended that pines in the surrounding area be treated as well to avoid the spreading of the disease.
