A Worried Mom's Guide to Foods Kids Should
Be extra careful of what you give to your children. Though you may feel anxious about your child's eating habits,do not pressure or nag him to eat. TAke note of the following:
CERTAIN TYPES OF MILK. Except for breast milk and infant formulas, other forms of milk may be difficult for infants to digest. They do not contain the same amount of nutrients as breast milk and may even trigger allergies in children.
FISH. Tuna or swordfish may contain high levels of mercury, which can damage the nervous system. Some oily fish, like salmon are healthier. Canned fish in oil and with low salt content may also be given to children.
HONEY. Honey has been used for centuries to relieve sore throat and cough. However, it is not safe for children under the age of 1, as it can cause botulism, a potentially fatal illness. Infant botulism occurs when the spores of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum are ingested and release toxins in the intestines.
WHEAT. Children whose families have a history of intolerance or increased sensitivity to gluten-a protein found in some grains, have a high risk of developing gluten intolerance or hypersensitivity. They should avoid eating grains like wheat, rye, oat and barley.
SUGAR AND SALT. Avoid adding sugar or salt to foods you prepare for children, not only are these substances unhealthy for children, they may also create a craving excessively sweet and salty foods in the future.
NUTS. If someone n your family is allergic to nuts refrain from feeding your child peanuts, including peanut based products like peanut butter.Nuts also cause choking. Avoid giving it to children under 5years old.
CITRUS FRUITS. Not recommended for babies under 6months because it may cause tummy upset and other digestive problems.
