In normal circumstances, we believe excessive hunger is because we have not taken food for prolonged hours.  But being excessively hungry is a condition called polyphagia. This condition could be caused by a number of mental and physical ailments. The body metabolism may increase due to certain physical ailments resulting for increased appetite.

Depending on the patient's ailment, proper treatment could be taken for polyphagia.

Persons who had a brain injury may have symptoms of severe headaches, nausea and changes in appetite.

People who suffer chronic depressions may overeat. We may not be hungry, but we tend to keep ourselves occupied with food when we are tensed.

Diabetic patients normally have excessive hunger, when blood sugar levels fluctuate and their diets are not controlled.

Persons with hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid produces excess hormones, could result in increase of appetite and weight gain.

Thus it is advisable to consult a doctor, if we experience such abnormal increase in our food intake.
