Page Ranking

It was not until one of my blog sites had a Rank 2 and appreciated by a reviewer, did I know and realize what made it to that rank.  That blog was, and is still, dedicated to blog advertisements.  All the while, I thought it was only the traffic that I was bringing in to the site that made it to a rank.  There was a point when the ad provider even suspected that I was using unacceptable strategies to get a higher rank.  I informed them that I did not know anything about page ranking except that it involves traffic to the site!  It was at that point that I made a research on what it takes to get a good page rank.

On the research, I found out that back links or linking to other sites play an important role even better than traffic sites, keywords, tags, social site networking and other types of promotions and advertisements.  Links to other sites and back links to related or ranked sites provide a greater traffic than you would expect.  Why?  Because those sites also promote their websites and if you are linked to them your site benefits from it.  Their promotion efforts could have a wider scope compared to an individual website.  Therefore there is a tendency for those who make a search or surf to click on your link on that website to search or find out more.  It means it has relevance to their search or surfing intentions.

Focus on a website has its advantages and disadvantages.  It is more more specific so it has some sort of a "niche" for SEOs.  On the other hand, it could be too "narrow" that only searchers or surfers for that specific site has much lesser "audience".  As an example, car owners will search for car related topics.  With the millions or billions of car owners, a car related site could get a higher rank compared to a site that deals on how to cut finger nails.

A general site has its advantage because of the seach option on the site.  It might just have both a car information and how to cut finger nails.  It will depend on how much the site is read on those topics will it get the attention and rank it deserves.

Another example will be population.  With the internet trend and usage, based on population, websites dedicated to Chinese and Indian topics could get a high page rank.  Why?  Because on population alone, you could almost imagine the number, in millions, of these nationalities making a search or surfing.  Especially so, if the website has transliteration or content that would have scripts in their own.
