Durian - Love It or Hate it!

by James Kong

I remembered reading a blog either by  Peaceful :

The World's Ugliest Fruit-- But Like Most Things It's Good For You, If You Can Get Past The Smell...LOL! :)

The blog was about duian and how "yucky" many people felt.

But I still want to blog about Durian - A very likeable food in SouthEast Asia also known as the KING OF FRUITS.

I read an article in one of the local magazine and i took the time to type out the report they have. It's from 8-Days Magazine July Issue, written by Florence Fong. A couple of food experts were invited to try out the 5 types of Durian found locally.

1) Peanut – 2 out of 5 stars

    -    It has a curvy shape, tiny, peanut-sized seeds.

    -    Creamy and good texture

    -    Origin – Segamat

    -     Price $10-12/kg

2) Red Prawn ( Hong Xia ) – 3 out of 5 stars

    -         Adorably, rotund and reddish in colour

    -         Very sweet and moist, odour not too strong.

    -         Good introductory durian for foreign tourists

    -         Price $8-10/kg

-         Origin – Muar

3) Mao Shen Wang (Cat mountain King ) – 5 out of 5 stars

    -         Honey-hued with fat, glossy flesh that slides of its seed silkily.

    -         Boast a gooey, bitter-sweet and unmistakably buttery finish.   Luscious!

    -         Origin – Pahang

-         Price $12-20/kg

4) Golden Phoenix – 3.5 out of 5 stars

    -         Fresh, unique taste ( a bit like avocado)

    -         Origin : Segamat

    -         Price $8-16 /kg

5) D24 – 4 out of 5 stars

-Meaty, smooth with a heady bitterness akin to brandy

  - Good texture but slightly pungent

  - Origin – Pahang

  - Price $8-12/kg

I personally woud recommend "Red Prawn" to my readers as an introductory durian due to its less pungent smell. But my favourite is D24. Any durian lovers out there that want to share their choices?
