We are being overrun by NIMBY's
We are being overrun by these at times disagreeable creatures called NIMBY's. What are NIMBY"s? These are folks that constantly complain about a situation but don't want to be a part of the solution. Their rallying cry is "Not In My Back Yard".
These are the people who complain about criminals walking the streets, but don't want a prison within 100 miles of their home. They moan about the homeless, but don't you dare suggest opening a shelter in the same county. They want the airport convenient but please redirect all flights paths. Why they've even complained about kids not having anything to do and they are the first ones to ban young people from their establishments.
It was not always that way though. NIMBY's started off as a line of defense against danger and just evolved into the Grinch-like creatures of today. The ancient NIMBY was usually fighting against an environmental hazard that put themselves and their neighbors at risk. It was events such as Three Mile Island and Love Canal that spurred their growth. But it soon became apparent that the Beneficial NIMBY was being replaced by a selfish greedy strain if NIMBY whose only concern is for themselves. They still appear to be NIMBY's on the outside, but inside they are a completely different animal.
When the modern NIMBY tells you that they don't want a prison near them, it's not because of the concern of escaped convicts but because it could affect their property values. When they tell you they don't want a homeless shelter it's because they are worried someone might ask them for a dime. They don't want the airport near their home because the planes are too noisy. And they don't want kids around because they could be part of a gang.
The sad part is that modern NIMBY"S are so prevalent in politics and lobbying today that when a true good spirited NIMBY comes along, the cause can be lost among the selfish griping of his modern cousins.

It not so much about where the prison is placed as the fact that the community will demand it but not want to contribute to the solution. If the NIMBY's argument was "These escaped convicts will contribute to higher crime statistics" They might have a valid argument. However what you have is NIMBY's crying about criminals waking the street free and clear when they should be in jail then crying about property values when you attempt to build or expand one.

Not to defend NIMBYS - but on some of the issues such as Prison siteing - in fact any utility etc - It would seem
that rather than impose - the community should receive adequate (and possibly residual) compensation for inconvenience or loss in value/revenue. Such that opposition is placated.
If this is found to cost too much (for the Utility) the site was wrong - and the cheap option of government forcing the issue (maybe after "community consultation") is being persued.

We've got one in one of my networking groups. We have a networking calendar that lists all of the local networking events except the monthly networking breakfast sponsored by my company. He says we are everything in the book except a legitimate business.
Could be that since he's a used car salesman, he's scared someone will use it to sue him for selling them a lemon.

They are not NIMBYs, J, they are Sad Little Idea Snatching Toads - SLISTs (and that is just the polite version!) - and SLISTs are a sad fact of Internet Communities. They lurk all over the place and then come up with "original topics".
Mind you, some of them are probably NIMBYs in their spare time.

NIMBY's are simply another reason that this world is on the verge of environmental collapse... They seek to maintain a status quo that has been in place for about 4000 years now and holler "Uptopian" at those of us who seek to even undo any part of that status quo...
NIMBY's are surefire proof of the statement "Those who don't learn from the Past, are destined to repeat it...."

After reading all this, I think we need to accept that the positive NIMBYs are a thing of the past and need another name.
With the "old" ones we are talking about people who sought to protect their backyards from dangers or hazards imposed by multinationals etc. on their towns or blocks. Keep My Town Safe!
This new bunch are the whingers! They DON'T WANT - but without solutions.
The only example I can think of at ApSense is The setting up of the QCWG as a solution to spam free Groups -

NIMBY's are Also on the Internet. They Are the one's that say they can't make money with certain Internet Programs when they never even tried the programs or business opportunities. They Holler Scam everytime a program they can't afford or a business is not free to join.
This Is Why I Have Adopted Two Affirmations:
"NOTHING HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOTHING" and "IF YOU DON'T GET THEN YOU DON'T GET IT"

The sad part is that these people have given the NIMBY a bad name. When someone yells "not in my backyard" because of an actual hazard, many people just look at them and label them another NIMBY. When the effects of that hazard become apparent they want to know why no one said anything or did anything to prevent it.
But someone did say something. That someone just got buried under the NIMBY "blanket of disdain"

some blogs on black dating community bigblackconnect.com. Many blacks are NIMBY. I think
we may show some help to our black brothers and sisters

We've actually got a serious NIMBY named Sarah. She is the "Block Captain for our neighborhood. She does absolutely nothing except say "I'm the Block Captain. I tried to start a neighborhood watch program, did she do anything at all, NO. I fixed her though. For the next two years when she says "I'm the Block Captain" I'm going to come back with "I'm a sitting member of the Homeowners Association Board of Directors! My first order of business is revamping the Block Captain program into what

I should not laff, this is a very serious situation people have gotten themselves into. Complaining does nothing but drive people nuts... we need to see action. We CAN make a difference. But what will it take to get the NImBY's to act?
