Building An Email List with Your Own Newsletter or Ezine by Debbie Ducker
Building An Email List with Your Own Newsletter or Ezine
By Debbie Ducker
We have all learned that one of the top ways to get your business started and keep it going is by building a strong list of people you can email over and over again.
As good as this sounds many leave you wondering how to do that.... Where do you start? What are your options? How do you implement those options?
Any one that has researched this knows the options are vast and can become quite confusing. I will attempt to give you an overview of two of the top methods of building a list and see if I can eliminate some of the confusion surrounding them. They are having your own Newsletter or Ezine.
Now I mention these as two options because both of these have their own definition and are not exactly the same thing.
A Newsletter as it was meant originally is basically what it says... a newsletter keeping you up to date on the site that puts the newsletter out. It may or may not contain content. It can basically be just to inform you of new products or services from the site owner and anything they would consider interesting to you as the member.
An Ezine on the other hand, derived from it's offline counter part Magazine, is an online magazine. Thus members that join would expect interesting articles, information, and tips on the theme of the ezine. Just as you would go to the store and pick up a "Sports Illustrated" magazine because you are interested in sports and want the latest news and out put in that area. So the same goes for an "Ezine" people that join it all have an interest in what the theme of your particular ezine is.
So with the above defined, you will want to decide which is right for you. Then getting started with either all boils down to basically the same options on how to make it a reality for you. Here are a couple based on my experience in this area.
1. The first method is to get an autoresponder that allows you to either have members signup direct by email or the ability to use a form on your website. You can find various professional sites providing either or both of these signup methods. One free option is - GetResponse or a paid service such as AWeber
There of course are also many more free options out there, groups.yahoo.com, groups-beta.google.com, lists.topica.com to name a few. Many people run successful ezines with free methods. One pitfall is that you have to rely on their servers to be working.
You can also opt to have a script on your own web site. This is a bit more expensive and not really an option for many. But you can find some very good scripts by doing a search for "auto responder scripts for your web site" at Google.
2. The second method, and one I highly recommend is, to have a blog on your own web site. I suggest this because it is at the top of the list in cutting edge technology these days due to the benefits it gives you. One of which is RSS feed capabilites which allows your subscribers to put your feed URL into their favorite feed reader and get instant notice when you post your current ezine or newsletter.
How to get a blog has many options. One is to create your blog with an independent provider such as Blogger.com or again to host one on your own site. The second option is not as expensive as you think. Just do your homework on web hosts and you will be abel to find a quality host for a small price monthly.
For the more advanced that already have their own web site you can download various web blog scripts and install them yourself such as Wordpress or Movable Type.
And again hosting on your own site is highly recommended because of the fact that the RSS feed capability alone, mentioned above, will pretty much guarantee the placement of your site in both Yahoo - Add URL and Google - Add URL searches. Provided you follow a few simple steps in constructing your ezine or newsletter before submitting it to these two searches.
1. Have your own domain hosted.
2. Set up your blog and input posts or articles containing good content (Minimum of 25 articles is recommended).
3. Use the add to “My…†RSS feed buttons such as Yahoo, MSN and many other search sites give you to use on your blogs.
4. Keep your newsletter or ezine updated or posted to on a regular basis.
In conclusion I will quote Paul Myers Publisher, TalkBiz News. "The key to success with any aspect of an online presence that involves lists is delivering quality content and relevant offers to a targeted group that asked for them."
So with all the above you can now get started on one of the very best ways to build a strong list. Your comments and questions are always welcome.
Sincerely, Debbie Ducker
