Do you remember the outfits your mum dressed you in when you were little? Maybe the painful memory has been erased now, but you only need to look back at old photographs for a reminder of the truly hideous fashions you once sported. The worst thing is, your mum let you go out of the house dressed like that! As we grow older and become more fashion conscious, we tend to steer away from daring looks and opt for the more sensible, safe, and fashionable options. However, there are still times in every girl’s life where she’ll look back and think, what on earth was I wearing? To help you avoid committing heinous fashion crimes, we’ve come up with ten common fashion faux-pas that should be steered away from at all costs. If you’re guilty of sporting any of these non-trends, we’ll send the fashion police around now.

1.      Matchy – matchy: Some women have a tendency to wear one colour and choose accessories, shoes and handbags in the same colour, in a bid to co-ordinate. Ladies, I’m afraid this is a complete and utter no-no in the world of fashion. Mix things up a bit and opt for colour clashing accessories.

2.      Too many colours at once: On the flip reverse of that last point, try to avoid the technicolour dream-coat look – it only worked for Joseph and leaves the modern day lady looking more like she’s stepped out of the house wearing a patchwork quilt. Try to stick to no more than three colours at once to avoid hurting other people’s eyes when they look at you.

3.      Denim on denim: Whilst certain people can pull off the double denim trend, simply wearing varying shades of denim in one outfit just screams fashion disaster. If you want to wear all-over denim, choose a denim dress. Alternatively, pair an oversized denim shirt with a fitted white vest top and coloured cord jeans.

4.      Large shoulder pads: Once a massive trend, the bulky shoulder look is really best reserved for the man in your life. If you’re in to the androgynous trend, try wearing a smart fitted blouse with a matching blazer and pants combination. Choose a blouse with ruffles to add a touch of femininity to your outfit and team with bright coloured heels.

5.      Pants on show: If your skirt or dress is too short, you’re just going to attract the wrong sort of attention not to mention you’ll do yourself no favours in the body department. Stick to cuts and hem lengths that flatter your figure. If you have great legs, you can make the most of them with a mini skirt, but ensure it covers your pants fully when you sit down, otherwise you’ll be left red-faced with shame.

6.      Bra on show: Bras are worn as an undergarment to provide support. They are not supposed to be visible through tops. Whilst a sheer blouse can look ultra-stylish, worn over a colour clashing bra will only make you look trashy. Ensure your underwear is the same colour as your top to look classy and chic rather than lady of the night.

7.      VPL: Visible panty lines are not attractive in the slightest. They create extra rolls of fat and make the wearer look bigger than she actually is. They also completely ruin what could be a stunning dress. Make sure you buy correctly fitting underwear and avoid wearing over garments that are too tight fitting.

8.      Low cut top and short skirt combination: Ladies, the rules of fashion dictate that either legs or chest can be on show, but never both at once. Not only does it mess with your body proportions, it looks really cheap and tarty. Stick to a more modest look and go for the less is more approach. That’s less exposure is more attractive for those of you who were wondering.

9.      Ill-fitting clothing: If you’re clothes are far too big and baggy, they can actually make you look out of shape and much bigger than you are. On the other hand, if you insist on squeezing yourself into clothes that are a size too small, it’ll accentuate unsightly bulges. Don’t look at the size number on the tag when you shop; instead focus on feeling comfortable in your clothing.

10.  Over accessorising: Accessories can brighten up the dullest of outfits and make you look really classy and chic. However over accessorising actually has the opposite effect and makes the wearer look cheap and tacky.
