Five important tips for planning a window display

by Lesley Sampson Freelance Writer

If you work in retail, the chances are you'll already know the importance of eye-catching displays to catch the customer's eye. A bold display can provide a retail outlet with a handy sales boost - but there's a lot you need to think about in order to get the best results possible. Firstly, it helps to choose the right point-of-sale display items from UKPOS, such as leaflet holders. Secondly, you also need to think very carefully about the aesthetics of your window display so that it translates into higher sales. It might all sounds like a bit of a rigmarole, but nevertheless it is worth making the effort.

According to an article from eHow.com, a window display can be a creative and - perhaps most importantly - inexpensive way of enticing shoppers to buy certain products. This doesn't necessarily mean that your window display has to be ornate or otherwise elaborate. In fact, a simple window display can often be more effective in grabbing a shopper's attention. After all, you only have a limited space of time in which to catch a consumer's eye and interest them so that they decide to explore further. If your display is overly elaborate, then it may have the opposite effect - so there's a fine line you need to tread.

The first thing you need to do when you come to create a window display is to decide which products you're going to put into it. Again, you should avoid the temptation to simply cram as much in there as you can. Clutter can be seriously counter-productive. However, the exact number of items you use in your window display - and indeed the type of items you add to it - will depend on the size of the display space itself. It's worth keeping items together in groups of three to five, as odd numbers have a tendency to be more eye-catching.

One of the most important things you need to remember about your window display is that you really have to get the lighting right. You could, if you wanted, use coloured spotlights to draw attention to specific items - but again, avoid blasting items with garishly-coloured lights. It also helps if you can choose light and brightly-coloured items for your display, perhaps complementing them with various decorative accents. You could choose seasonal accents - so, for instance, coloured leaves could add a certain seasonal flavour during the autumn.

An article from Entrepreneur.com suggests that you should also seek to regularly update your window displays, rather than leaving them in the shop window to fade. Giving shoppers something different to look at every now and again should make it easier for you to engage their attention - which is obviously what you need to do if you're going to get them to buy anything. It also suggests that bold accents and colours can make your window displays stand out from others, and notes that inventive design ideas can go a long way to enticing customers into your store.
