Politics is dirty business. Negative ads unfortunately are just "the nature of the beast". However negative ads should be about the policies of the political opponent, not the character of the political opponent. The Obama campaign has crossed the line from "negative ads" to outright character assassination based on outright lies, which says more about the character of President Obama than Gov. Mitt Romney, as I see it.
