Pain relief within seconds... fact or fiction? true or false?

My friends told me it was fact... my wife and I discovered it to be true.

Just over a year ago my wife underwent a knee operation. replacement of her left knee with an artificial knee, followed by many long months of slow recovery and prescription pain killers. In particular waking up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain because she had accidently turned over in her sleep... you can imagine the consequences.
