One of the nice things about the Red Flag Rule is that it has created an "official" definition of personally identifying information.  This is what you must protect in order to have good information security.  And with the definition that has been spelled out in the Red Flag rule even an address book you use to send out Christmas cards from your business could possibly get you in trouble.

According to the Red Flag Rule, personally identifying information is any item of information which can be used by itself or in conjunction with other information to identify someone.  Any item of information.

Think about it for a minute.  Your social security number is a big identifier but what about your name?  Think your address is not personally identifying?  Can it be combined with something else to identify you?  You bet it can.  Any snippet of information can be labeled Personally identifying if it points to you.

Is it time to seriously think about securing personal information?  Yes it is past time.  A little paranoia just may go a long way in helping you to protect yourself and your business.

What about letters themselves?

If they have personally identifying information in them, then the safest way is to treat them as needing protection.

A letter or piece of lain with account numbers, addresses, full names etc treat it as dangerous. A personal Note with "Hey Bob" Is probably safe but the best bet is to shred it anyway.
