God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I cam and the wisdom to know the difference.

These are words to live by.  Many people have taken this simply prayer to heart.  Recovering alcoholics and addicts, people under major stress and those who have gone through tragedy.  This one simple prayer contains all of the words necessary to help us through the things that life throws at us.  We just don't see it in many cases.

Serenity

Peace calm and acceptance.  We cannot control the world.  The more we try the more stressed out we become.

Courage

Both acceptance and action take courage.  Courage is not machismo.  Think of the cowardly lion.  When the time came to act he acted, that is courage.  Accepting that things are out of your control and adjusting your own actions to acceptance take courage

Wisdom

The longer we live the more we learn.  Applying those lessons to your daily life is wisdom.  It's not the glaring things but the little small things that take wisdom.  Any idiot knows fire will burn, running away from a burning building is not wisdom.  Wisdom is preventing the fire in the first place.

Applying these three words in your life can often keep a situation from getting out of hand, especially when it comes to depression.  Acceptance of the situation, the courage to face it and the wisdom to change it by getting help will all help you avoid sinking deeper into the pit.

Hi Cheryl,

Isn't that a quote from St Francis of Assisi ?
Always like those words.

Actually according to Wikipedia it's credited to Reinhold Niebuhr who wrote it for a sermon in1934.
The Prayer of St Francis tends to get confused with this because both are an integral part of the AA dependence of faith here's the link to the prayer of St Francis also http://www.aahistory.com/francis.html

Words to LIVE by Cheryl!

Most of the suffering humanity experiences comes from clinging, or arefusal to accept things as they really are. however, acceptance requires wisdom, courage, and will bring about serenity.
they are all pieces of an interlocking puzzle.
when we discover one of the pieces, we discover the other pieces too....

My Mom was a worrier. She worried about this and worried about that even though she could do nothing to change the situation. My brother takes after her how ever my mom for all of her worrying really never let it totally take over her life. My brother however cannot handle stress at all.

He he has panic attacks which in turn feed feed his bi-polar disorder and he totally loses control of his life.

My sister and I for some reason have always had a "whatever" mentality. We look at a situation if we can do something about it we do, if we can't then we simply blow it off and move on.

The first time I heard the words to the Serenity prayer in made sense to me since I had basically been living the prayer all my life.
