Back in the days of my youth I worked for a company that sold vinyl siding as a telemarketer.  The way we did our market was simple.  In the days before "Do Not Call" registry, you simply picked up the phone book and started dialing.  The owner of the company had driven around town and identified what he considered poor areas.  He gave us a list of street names we were not supposed to call.  It was his thinking that since these people lived there, they could not afford vinyl siding.

One Sunday at church I was approached by a woman who lived on one of those streets.  She was very interested in fixing up the home she had owned for more than 20 years and wanted siding.  The company would not allow us to make an appointment with her.  Luckily I had a good rapport with one of the salesmen.  I told him what was going on.

He met with this lady.  Yes she could afford it.  She wanted to remodel her home and fix it up just because she thought the neighborhood could use some sprucing up.  Not only did she get the siding for her home she gave two more referrals who also bought siding for their homes in the same general neighborhood.  No not everyone could afford siding, but those who could bought.  Three homes in a neighborhood of people who could not afford it.  And even so the owner of the company kept his narrow minded view.

Don't prejudge your prospects because you think they can't or won't do business with you.  That person you are writing off may purchase from you and lead you to others who want to do business with you!

I was a roofer and did siding for many years.

The second lesson here is that word of mouth advertising is the best (or the worst if you don't do good work)
I didn't advertise and always had more work than I could do.

This is true. Word of mouth can make or break a business

Most people have a subjective perception about your business so many times they can help you BRAKE not MAKE ! Sad but true!

This is why we must all be as professional as possible. Many people handle rejection in a manner that leaves a bad vibe in the air. Or you have a business that is revolutionary and they just don't get it!

I've been trying to think of revolutionary businesses. It's rather hard since one man's "revolution" is another man's "been there done that". It's much easier to identify a revolution after it has occurred. I will say this, right now revolution seems to be all about "information". Sharing, protecting and creating. I'm already in the protecting field. I can only handle one revolution at a time folks.
