They run on electric from a plug in and have a small watt light that heats the wax and melts it. Being it is a small watt of 25 or less the wax never gets above your body temperture so you can never get burned by the wax and being its not being burnt it is none toxic. Some older candles have lead in them and the waxes themselfs could verywell be toxic when burnt.
