There can be many causes for chronic joint pains. Osteoarthritis is the most common of them. This is a degenerative disease. Trauma is another common cause of joint pain. There can be an injury which may cause swelling and severe pain on that same joint. Sprains are due to injury to tendons and ligaments surrounding joints. Occasionally, there is a very minor injury, but the pain is too severe. This is a common indicator that there is some other cause for the pain which needs evaluation.

In inflammatory arthritis, there is joint pain, swelling and early morning stiffness. The joint can be red and warm to touch. The pain can be so severe that the patient may not be able to move the limb. If not treated properly, these patients may end up with deformed joints requiring joint replacement surgeries.
