by Sanjay Singh Ask Apollo
We’ve heard a lot about people having kidney stones and that they’ve undergone various treatment and medication to get the stone out. But have you ever thought you too might have kidney stones? Well, let’s find out.

What Are Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones are hardened salt and minerals which are often made of uric acid or calcium. These hard collections can travel to other parts of the body through the urinary tract. The sizes of these stones can vary from a fraction of an inch or so big that it takes up the entire kidney.

Why Are They Formed?
Kidney stones are formed when an excessive amount of minerals get accumulated in a person’s urine. This happens when you do not hydrate yourself in proper times. In such a case the urine becomes very concentrated with the increase in levels of minerals. In such a case the chances of these stones become higher. Kidney stones are more common to people who have diabetes or those who are obese.

Symptoms That You Have Kidney Stones
If the stones are very small you may not even realize you have one until it moves to the ureter (the tuber through which urine travels). Although most of the stones will pass out of your body, there are situations when you may have to go through a surgical procedure to get the stone removed; both are painful processes. I had the privilege to have spoken to some of the best nephrology doctors in Chennai; and withfirsthand information from the experts themselves here are 5 symptoms that you may have kidney stones:

1. Pain During Urination
When the stone moves between the bladder and ureter, you will feel an intense pain; it can be described as an intense burning feeling. It is good in such a situation to consult a nephrologist because the pain maybe is mistaken for a urinary tract infection, said a urologist from Chennai

2. Blood in Urine
This is a very common symptom and is called hematuria. The color of the blood can be pink, red or brown. In such a case you must go and see a doctor.

3. Smelly and Cloudy Urine
This could be a legitimate reason for you having a kidney stone. A healthy urine doesn’t have a strong odor and is clear.

4. Urgency to Go and Releasing Small Amount
The frequent and urgent needs to go than usual is a very common symptom of kidney stones in the body. The other symptom is in the blockage of urine due to the presences of stones resulting in very slow or less flow of urine from the body.

5. Nausea, Vomiting, Fever, And Chills
Although all these maybe a common sign of an infection in the kidney it may also be a sign of the presence of stones in the kidney. It is recommended you consult an expert in such cases.

If you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it is highly recommended that you go and visit an expert immediately. Hope this post has been helpful to you.
