by Yuvaap Findyoury Health and Wellness

We all reach a stage of our lives where we want to start exercising, get fit and be a healthier version of ourselves. But most of the time it is difficult to choose between a Yoga vs Gym routine. Both methods are very popular to get toned but there are certainly distinct differences. The primary difference is one is a non-intensive way and the other requires you to undergo intensive workout sessions. It is difficult to list the pros and cons of both the forms of exercise and what you choose to depend on the kind of lifestyle you have. But they have a common aim of better health and physical fitness.
Let’s explore the 2 sides of the fitness coin-

Benefits of Gym

  • It will strengthen your muscles.
  • It makes you sweat, which removes toxins from the body and increases blood circulation.
  • It relieves stress because exercise releases endomorphin, which improves mood.
  • It will burn all the excess calories, so you will lose weight quickly.
  • Increases your appetite.

Benefits of Yoga
  • It will keep you energized throughout the day.
  • It improves blood circulation and the digestive system and thus removes toxins.
  • Regulates bowel movement so you won't feel constipated and bloated.
  • It regulates your emotions and thus reduces stress, which is great for your mental health.
  • It is very beneficial for you if you are dealing with any chronic health condition.

Differences between yoga and gym

GYM:

  1. You must have a membership for gym class. You will also need a trainer to guide you with equipment and exercises. The plus side is that it ensures consistency.
  2. You will need a trainer at the gym because you may not be familiar with all the equipment and exercises that put you at greater risk of injury.
  3. In the gym, we focus more on physical health than mental health.
  4. The gym focuses on physical health, toning, and great cardiovascular health. It helps in the release of endomorphin, which is the hormone of happiness, and therefore improves mood.
  5. There are no such methods in the gym, you have to be extra careful when working out in the gym.
  6. A good workout at the gym will make you more conscious of your eating habits as you wouldn't want to gain back all the calories you lost at the gym.
  7. In the gym, you focus more on toning, so you can focus on one specific area of your body and work hard to strengthen it. You can always include variations in your exercises, or you can step it up a notch and add some fun.

YOGA:

  1. A typical yoga practice does not require you to spend a lot of money and time. If you want, you can join a yoga studio or you can always watch some beginner yoga videos online.
  2. Since yoga is suitable for beginners, anyone can start practicing it even with the help of online videos, so the chances of yoga risking injury are minimal.
  3. Yoga focuses on deep breathing exercises that reduce stress and also regulate your emotions. This will give you more control over your emotions.
  4. Yoga works on all your internal systems and detoxifies you from the inside out, leading you to a balance of physical, mental and emotional health.
  5. There are specific yoga methods designed for people suffering from various injuries like back, cervix etc. which help in their healing.
  6. Yoga forces you to perceive, and therefore you will not have the opportunity to overeat.
  7. Yoga offers you variety as there are many forms of yoga. So if you think yoga is boring, try taking a yoga challenge that might surprise you
