Why Your ACs Must Have the R-32 Refrigerant

by Amili R. SEO

In today’s erratic climatic conditions, it is hard to ignore the eminent threat of global warming. In fact, it is not just hard to ignore, but is also extremely dangerous to do so. According to Global Climate reports, the average temperature of the Earth has increased by 0.28-degree Celsius over the past decade and twice as much as in recent times

Here at Daikin, the future of the world’s air is our greatest concern. As industry leaders and technology innovators, we consider it our responsibility to pave the way for a greener tomorrow with our air conditioners and other popular products leading the way with energy efficient technologies.

It is for this reason that we phased out all our R-22 models in air conditioners including the popular 1.5-ton inverter AC and switched to the greener, next-generation refrigerant, R-32. To understand the impact of this move on our environment, let us first improve our technical knowledge of the R-32 refrigerant.

What is the R-32 refrigerant?

Firstly, if you are not aware of what a refrigerant is, simply put, it is the cooling gas that converts the warm air into cool air, then expelled by the compressor unit. Of course, there are a few other technical steps and parts involved in this process, but the gist of it is that without the refrigerant, your AC won’t have any cooling.

Coming to specifically the R-32 refrigerant, it is also known as difluoromethane and belongs to the HFC family of refrigerants. Its chemical formula is CH2F2. It has a boiling point of –51 degree-Celsius and uses 78% less refrigerant per cooling operation as compared to R410A. It has zero ozone depletion potential and minimum global warming potential.

How is the R-32 refrigerant eco-friendly?

Refrigerants play a key role in global warming as they are gaseous substances with chemicals that can penetrate the ozone layer. As more and more citizens across countries are using air conditioners, the use of refrigerants has gone up significantly, thereby increasing the need for greener, more eco-friendly solutions.

The R-32 refrigerant is known as a green, next-generation refrigerant as it checks all the boxes in reducing global warming related threats. Our RA models such as the 1.5-ton inverter AC and other ranges manufactured in Rajasthan, India use the R-32 refrigerant as it has zero ozone depletion potential and only 1/3rd global warming potential.

It has a Modified Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 472 as compared to R-410A's Modified GWP of 2,027. The R-32 refrigerant also emits 75% less carbon dioxide and has a better life cycle climate performance in comparison to previous refrigerants. Another big advantage is that the R-32 is a single component refrigerant and hence it is easier to produce, manage and recycle. However, extra precautions need to be taken while this gas is used as its toxic levels are slightly higher.

Does the R-32 offer superior performance?

Keeping the climatic factors aside, as a consumer it is important to know if the R-32 affects performance for the better or for the worse. The truth is, a Daikin AC 1.5-ton price in the market is not just based on its capacity and features but is also based on the R-32 refrigerant, the best for not just the environment, but also for you.

The R-32 refrigerant offers:

  • 15.3% more cooling as compared to R410A

  • Approximately 30% less charging volume as compared to R410A and R22

  • Approximately 5% more power savings as compared to R410A and,

  • Better performance at higher temperature as compared to R22 (Low Derating).

With these tested results, it is more than safe to say that the green, next generation R-32 refrigerant offers superior performance for your air conditioners in all aspects ranging from cooling to energy efficiency.

How is Daikin doing its bit to help the environment?

Apart from switching to the R-32 refrigerant, Daikin is also offering worldwide free access to patents for equipment using R-32 as we understand that refrigerant choice is key to saving the ozone layer and reducing global warming.

Therefore, to conclude, there can be no better decision than to switch to R-32 refrigerant models. With it we not only befriend the environment but are also making progress in cooling technology for better performance. So, the next time you look at a Daikin AC 1.5 ton price, remember that a tiny, yet significant part of it is the price we are paying to save the environment!
