This festival refers to an increase in the bond
between the siblings especially brother sister. This is one of the special and
most important festivals celebrated in India. It is celebrated in the month of
Shraavana on the full moon day. It is mainly celebrated in August.
Meaning of Raksha Bandhan
It means “tie a protection knot”. Raksha refers
to the protection and Bandhan refers to the tie.

Origin of Raksha Bandhan Festival
Indra Dev and Sachi
As per the incident mentioned in the ancient
legend book of Bhavishya Purana, there was a battle between Lord Indra and King
Bali. After realizing that Lord Indra was going to defeat, his wife went to
Lord Vishnu and asked for help. He provided the holy thread which she tied on
her husband’s wrist. And after that Lord Indra got victory in war. From that
time onwards, all wives tied that thread to their husbands whenever their
husbands used to go for war.
King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi
As per the incident mentioned in Vishnu Purana
and Bhagavata Purana, a Lord Vishnu when won three worlds from king Bali. He
asked him to stay at his palace. So, Goddess Lakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu went
to king Bali and tied a knot to him and made him her brother for a lifetime.
Krishna and Draupadi
According to an incident in Mahabharat,
Draupadi, Pandav's wife tied a knot to Lord Krishna before the epic war.
Yama and the Yamuna
Lord Yama did not visit his sister for almost 12
years that made her sad. When Lord Yama came to know about it, he went to meet
her. The Yamuna performed great hospitality which made him happy, and he asked her
to wish for a gift. She asked her brother to visit her again and again. So,
this festival is called “Bhai Dooj”.
