Which Popular Online Marketing Methods Fail While Others Succeed

by Kevin Petric Live The Way You Like
Online marketing seems like it would be the ideal way to market to the masses, but it is already failing to be effective. Just as how traditional marketing techniques have lost some of their usefulness, the same is happening for marketing done on social media, e-mail marketing, and other online marketing methods. This poses new marketing challenges. However, the Internet is still a valuable online marketing medium, with trends exploring new ways of using the Internet for marketing.

Popular and Ineffective Online Marketing Methods
E-mail was the first area of marketing that the Internet introduced. However, just as with traditional mail methods, most flyers and advertisements get overlooked. E-mail is an inexpensive and easy way to market that is convenient for both the business and the consumer. However, about 88% of e-mail marketing is never opened, according to MailerMailer Metrics Report. It would seem that e-mail marketing would be an effective method, because people are able to open e-mails when they choose to, and even have direct access to buy those products online. It may have been a more effective method originally, but now that consumers are flooded with systematic e-mails from businesses, they stop looking at them.

The rise of social media networks completely revolutionized how people and businesses market themselves. It allowed people to make connections that would have been otherwise impossible to make without the Internet. However, although social media has continued to be a way in which people and connect with one another and businesses, statistics show that it has gone in the same direction as e-mail in terms of effectiveness. Statistics gathered for the Facebook Marketing Conference show that users notice only 16% of Facebook marketing strategies. Similarly, 71% of tweets on Twitter are overlooked; according to a 2012 Sysmos study. Businesses and marketing departments are now moving in the direction of SMS online marketing to reach their customers in more effective ways.

Shift in Trends Toward Text Messaging
Social media and e-mail marketing are no longer the most effective online marketing methods. The most recent area of growth has been in the field of SMS online marketing. While text messaging has been around longer than social media networking, and is used more than e-mail, it is still a relatively unexplored method.

When you examine this consumer behavior, you see adaptations have to be made in marketing strategies. SMS online marketing is an area that is expected to become more popular. With 98% of the population opening all their texts, according to a study by Network World, it is somewhat surprising that it has not already become a popular marketing method.
