When you should plant different vegetables
by Martin Jacob Equip2goFood
prices are rising, and the food crisis is spreading around the world.
Underdeveloped, less industrialized countries are already suffering from the
effects of the current food crisis. Rising prices are also beginning to affect
consumers in the Australia. To provide your family with a buffer against the
unavailability of affordable food, or fresh produce, you need to plants and garden now!
Gardening
- not just a hobby
Gardening
has been one of the fastest growing hobbies in the Australia for many years. Thousands
of new gadgets, tools and products flooded the market making gardening easier
than ever. For many families, starting a garden in the kitchen - a fruit and
vegetable garden - is more important than ever, with the possibility of the
price of fresh produce being out of reach.
During
World War II, families were called upon to plant Victory Gardens. These gardens
supported families as large-scale farming supported soldiers. Today, the
movement to plant victory gardens has revived.
Now
is the time to plant
Unless
you live in the Melbourne Australia, you can grow year-round plants in your
yard or garden. It makes a good time to start a garden as early as spring or
autumn in mid-summer or mid-winter. Work such as soil preparation, plant
selection and starting and purchase of equipment will take one or two months.
If you start planning now, you will see your first harvest in a few months.
Following are some of the plants you can expect to harvest in a month or two
after your garden has been categorized by season. (This list is based on
gardening in temperate climates.)
·
Planted in mid-summer:
beans, beets, radishes, oats, turnips
·
Autumn planting: lettuce,
spinach, potatoes, turnips, onions, green onions, artichokes
·
Winter planting: peas,
rhubarb, asparagus, beets, celery, onions
·
Spring planting: squash
(winter and summer), pumpkin, tomatoes, eggplant, lettuce, spinach, sweet corn,
chard, mustard greens, runner beans, fennel
No
matter what time of year you plant your garden, you can always get plenty of
crops. Growing your own garden will give you peace of mind if food prices seem
out of your reach.
Buy
plants online
You
don’t have to go outside to buy the plants, as you can buy them online. There
are many websites that are selling plants online to their
